Lars Noah Balderskilde routinely gets phone calls in the middle of the night.

They’re from friends and family in his native Denmark, who comb flea markets, reconnoiter estate sales, and scavenge the streets for cast-off 1950s and ’60s furniture.

The other day, his cousin Jesper phoned from a Copenhagen sidewalk, where he’d just encountered a set of Kai Kristiansen dining chairs awaiting trash disposal.

Would Balderskilde like them salvaged for his next container shipment to the US? In New York, those chairs are worth $2,000.

So, ja! He would indeed.
