Knabstrup Ceramics actually started out in the mid 1800´s as a brickyard and was extremely successful for many years. In 1897, the plant was modernized and production expanded becoming the leader in Denmark, both technically and in terms of capacity. Philip Schou, founder of Aluminia and longtime director of Royal Copenhagen accepted the invitation of his nephew, who was running the company, to join the board.
Perhaps it was him, in 1907, that inspired the start of fine ceramic production in Knabstrup. Initially they began with an industrialized flowerpot for professional use but soon added broader assortment of pottery.
